Within the first five years of its existence, the gallery developed to become a leading voice for contemporary art, for example, Gustav Kurt Beck curated the Austrian participation of the Graphic Art-Biennale, São Paolo, and the Austrian Pavilion at the 27th Biennale in Venice in 1954. Workshops, events, lectures and exhibitions offered in the meantime a dense programme of production and viewing.
In 1973, the experimental workshop moved into rooms of the Trakl House in the centre of the Salzburg old town adapting the 180m² of working space to fit the needs of the workshop. At that time, it was the technology of lithography which was to form the backbone of the production whereby intaglio and relief printing resources were still available.
As the activities of the workshop increased, the collection was concentrated exclusively on all the graphic works produced in the workshop. The purchasing of further works of art was stopped due to reasons of budgetting and the gallery activities were discontinued to support the production activities. Today, as many as 40 artists annually make full use of these facilities for their work.
In 1998, the workshop, renamed ”The Grafische Werkstatt im Traklhaus“ took on a new comprehensive position. A special anniversary initiated a relaunch of the activities working with editions, resulting in a portfolio of lithographies by 35 artists.
The workshop now organizes up to six exhibitions a year in Austria and abroad, collaborating with galleries, museums and art associations. Regular presentations from the collection here as well as printed works are shown in the workshop space. In 2000, the board decided that the valuable collection (more than 2000 works) had reached a size which needed outside help for archiving purposes. The collection was given as a donation to the prov-ince of Salzburg, which, besides the City of Salzburg, is the most active supporter of the Graphic Workshop. Nevertheless, one work from every printed edition remains in possession of the workshop.
There are four modes of operation at the graphic workshop today: an open studio, a professional workshop for printing, a possibility to present and produce editions and a place of education and for courses. The workshop has now been active for more than 55 years as a non-profitmaking organisation, working as mediators and producers and attempting to guarantee artists optimal access to resources and technology. In accordance with their non-profit mission, the graphic workshop wishes to support mutually all that is reputable, accomplished unknown and new.
